The original strings on a ukulele are likely to be low quality (unless your ukulele is an expensive model). I was advised to replace the strings with better quality ones and I must admit it did make a big difference to the overall tone of the instrument. The 'Aquila' brand of strings come highly recommended and a set cost me £8.00 including delivery.
You don't have to do this right away but it will improve the tone of the instrument - so do not wait until a string breaks before replacing them.
